TRANSGENDER PEOPLE HOPE FOR SC INTERVENTION

This article focuses on the difficulties that trans people have to face during the Assam National Register of Citizens (NRC). The third or the transgender community are the worst affected in terms of documents dealing with citizenship and identity. The article prescribes several examples of transgender people, like Dutta, Zeena, Baruah, etc., who have been denied entry in the NRC, mostly because of the social stigma that drove them out of their houses and families. The problem according to Dutta is that NRC forces them to prove connections with families who haven’t accepted them in the first place. The article further says that members of the trans community are planning to file a petition in the Supreme Court, highlighting how the NRC process is discriminatory towards these communities and that they will seek the SC's intervention in the same.

DECOLONIZING TRANSGENDER IN INDIA

The article primarily focuses on gender and sexually marginalized communities in the Eastern part of the country. The authors observe the transgender identity in the Indian context. The author’s personal experiences make a lot of the portion and observations in the essay. The author talks about the word ‘transgender’ used as a uniform or an umbrella term to identify all types of third gender identities which according to the author is problematic but shouldn’t be completely discarded off. There is no legal support available for transgenders to enter a marriage or set up a family. While trans people face sexual abuse every day in this country, there is nothing in the law to protect them. While the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Bill was going to be tabled in the monsoon session of Parliament after the Cabinet passed the Bill with 27 changes, the government has been unable to bring laws to improve the lives of transgenders on practical ground.
