Sonal Sharma in this reading talks about the role of caste and class in relation with domestic workers. In Indian society people get work according to their caste and class, though I agree with Sara Dickey that it is not caste, but rather class that the employer finds relevant in deciding who to give which job. I believe that reservations help a lot in giving people opportunities to rise out of their class. So actually people with castes that are considered to be low can get jobs that are considered to be of high standard.
Caste and class both play a role in domestic workers lives but majorly class does. Hygiene also reflect on people's class. There are women who belong to different hygiene groups on the basis on which the employer decides who to employ for which task. In almost the same class of women there are women of 'better' hygiene who are employed to work in the kitchens and to take care of the babies and kids and then there are women of comparatively lower hygiene who are employed for the bathroom work.
When we read about this it seems so cruel, but actually it happens in our own homes on a daily basis and we don't do anything about it.
