Authors Shilpa Phadke, Shilpa Ranade, and Sameera Khan, of the piece Why Loiter? Radical Possibilities for Gendered Dissent, speak of why it is important to recognise that women also have a right to pleasure, just as much as men. Public spaces have inherently been seen as spaces for men, since in the olden times, women were not really allowed to leave their houses. Away the right to pleasure, from women, also includes taking away their right to freedom, and usage of several amenities that the government provides for everyone.
Speaking from personal experience, there have been many a times where a man has not been questioned for being out and about, and for being in a certain place. But, if a woman is there, she is judged, her character is question, she is question. For example, it is never out of place for a man to be sitting at a bar and having a drink, alone. However, if a woman does the same, she is looked down upon.
Gaining the right top please is as important as stopping crimes, and violence against women. Only men having this right, is also discrimination between the genders.
Tanushree Paul's Space, Gender, and Fear of Crime, also essentially speaks of the same same issue. Why can a man enjoy his life without any woes or worries, while a woman has to think multiple times before even stepping out of the house to enjoy herself?
