SPACE, GENDER AND FEAR OF CRIME
The reading mainly talks about how space, gender and fear of crime are interlinked. Women indirectly or directly do things that the society or the male deems to be appropriate. This happens when fear is created, fear of crime. Even though males have significantly more fights in public than women do but there is a sense of fear that anything might happen and that she is never safe.
When you go to a public place and you don’t dress according to what is deemed to be acceptable by the society, the society makes you uncomfortable even girls makes comments such as, ‘this is not appropriate’, ‘then they fear that they will get raped’ etc. It is so ingrained in our minds as to how girls should behave in public and in private that even feminist women sometimes fail to take a stand. All this happens because of the fear that is created, the male-centric fear.
Even in private women tend to do things that make their male partners happy; dressing a particular way, behaving a particular way etc. some women do this out of the direct fear of knowing that their husbands or male partner will abuse them and some do them cause that is what they have been taught since time immemorial.
There is even fear of body, women even tend to fear for their bodies either hoping that their body is not too provocative or hoping that their bodies are feminine enough to keep the male partner happy.
Fear is a driving force, fear of being a women and fear of living in a partiarchal society.
