Week 3 - Decolonizing Transgender in India
In the colonial
India, homosexuals were subdued under single transnational umbrella by the state
and capitalist monarchs. The identity of homosexuality was painted in a way of
local custom and regional practice by the south Asian culture and practice as
expression of local understanding. In recent years, government of India and Hon’ble
supreme court of India have identified the homosexual communities on their
individual basis by providing them from aids to legalization of gay sex. But the
corporate bourgeoise aren’t willing to make any significant change in their
theme of working and thereby opening up to transgender communities. In Indian context,
trans identification is also paralleled by identification of class/caste, it is
being observed that societal treatment to a trans person depends to whether such
person belongs to a high or a low caste. Dalit communities are part of such inaccessibility
and similar distinction could be made in terms of gendered difference which
pertains out of tending heterosexual people actually part of homosexual
community.
