Week 8
The important to realize about the role of gender in institutions is that it is a continuous re-occurring event. Gender has always been a big part about institutions – it decides where a woman or man’s position lies, the women more than the man. The important detail lies in how we have always been a patriarchal society, thereby giving the upper hand to men. The casting couch problem persists for a long time. It has resulted in several women changing careers, or just giving in to the situation due to fear or due to the lack of capital to start elsewhere. Salma Hayek might just be one of the several women who went through this problem. Furthermore, there are many who didn’t speak up or will never speak up. The #MeToo movement is not of much significance according to me simply because I feel that having a movement for a situation for sexual assault is not the way the grave situation is supposed to receive any attention. It is a crime and has to be treated such as that. Women have to be provided the safety when they come out of their closets, to tell the truth about what happened to them but there should not be any insulation for women who do it on purpose.
