The MeToo movement was started by sexual harassment survivor and social activist Tarana Burke in 2006. The hashtag trended on social media and became a worldwide phenomenon with millions of women coming out with their stories of harassment and rape. Raya Sarkar’s List of Sexual Harassers consists of men who have been accused of harassment, quite a few of them never even convicted for their heinous crimes. Although the list had some strong results which made a lot of men lose their jobs, a lot of allegations were simply turned down just because there was no evidence or an official complaint filed against the offender. In such cases, it was observed that the offender belonged to a very high status family or was very influential. Sarkar’s list consisted of many men who were accused of committing serious sexual offences and who belonged to esteemed education institutions. However, most of these universities refused to even acknowledge these claims, let alone speak about it or look into the matter thoroughly. The allegations were simply put aside and no action whatsoever was taken against the person accused. This shows how much power men hold in such workplaces. It lets them get away with even the gravest of crimes and they walk away free while the victim lives every single day of her life in pain and anger.
