Rape Cultures in India

Pratiksha Baxi aptly elucidates upon the rape culture in India. She talks about how rape is increasingly being used as an apparatus to assert power over the meek and powerless in India. She calls out our city planners whose shortcomings allows for our neighbourhood to become conducive for a rape schedule, the judiciary for construing rape as sex (excluding the exceptions) which inevitably categorises rape as act of aberrant lust rather than the reality of it being a form of political violence and lastly the political parties (specially the right wing) who turn this atrocity into a resource for doing politics by shifting focus to the debate about capital punishment. Its ironical that political parties demanding for stricter laws for offences of rape are the very same parties whose attitudes and actions have been responsible for the establishment of rape culture in our society. What is worse is the fact that the scope of the debate on rape is centred on the female body, and invasive strategies of protecting it. Baxi highly concludes her piece by voicing out the importance of a higher level of intolerance against any act on the spectrum of sexual violence against women and this stance is one that desperately requires to be adopted in solidarity.
