I will be summarizing “#MeToo in India: 75 Professors, 30 Institutes, What Happened to Raya Sarkar’s List of Sexual Harassers?” by Piyasree Dasgupta.
In October 2017, Raya Sarkar published a list on Facebook comprising of men in academia that had been accused of sexual harassment. She was approached by several women, some of which wanted to remain anonymous. Raya Sarkar compiled this list on behalf of all those women, and it did take a toll on Ms. Sarkar’s personal well being. In the end, the list included 75 accused from 30 different institutes which included both national and international institutes.
The author here talks about what actually happened to the accused after the list containing their names went public through Facebook. To answer this question, the writes tried contacting these institutions, but the replies she got, very quite disappointing. Quite a few institutions didn’t even bother to reply. The lack of responses itself is a concern. Though some men did come out guilty and actions were taken against them, this was not even 50% of the list. This figure is quite worrying as a lot of it is still hidden from the public. It is essential that the entire discourse of these matters come out to the public view as it could undoubtedly help many students and faculty, identify and take such issues into serious consideration.
