Sexcapades and the Law
The author of the article
put forth her concerns about sexual harassment of women and the consecutive
role of the State interventions as well as legal developments to curb it and
its ineffective nature. She does so by referring to a landmark judgment of
Vishaka v. State of Rajasthan which holds a great significance in a country
like India where sexual harassment of women at workplaces were not only recognised
as an issue but was also unwelcomed. She also refers to other feminist scholars
like Katherine MacKinnon in her article. Sexual harassment is not just a social
issue confined to on sect, society or country, rather it’s an epidemic across
the world which has become a reality for millions of women. Sexual harassment
is not about sex but it is about power and how somebody when sexual harasses the
other takes away that power. But to get hold of that power again, the voices of
many, which has been silenced over all these years by the ways of establishment
and the relics of the past, needs to be voiced out.
