Rape Cultures in India - Pratiksha Baxi
Pratiksha Baxi reflects upon the rape culture in India and
how women are getting harassed and raped openly on the streets but still there
is no action being taken against it. She talks about various elements of the
society which actually enable the existence of such a culture. It is the duty
of the police to protect the citizens, however instead of policing the
offenders their techniques of surveillance are often focused on women’s
behaviour, movement, and clothing. She even reflects upon the role of judiciary
to bring justice, constructs rape as sex. With numerous Campaigns aimed at
introducing laws for the safety of women, prevention of sexual violence is
not something, which features in the planning and administration of the
city. Rather most political actors use it as a stage to demonstrate party
politics than actually striving to bring a change. There is a massive irony
associated with the political parties, particularly the right wing, demanding
harsher laws to punish the rapists without acknowledging that they themselves
have been responsible for the formation and propagation of rape culture in our
society. The author has rightly stated that "The city belongs to
heterosexist men after all."
