OPINION ON SEXCAPADES AND THE LAW
The Visakha judgement that laid down rules for women suffering sexual harassment at their workplace has, on paper seen to be a positive step by the judiciary in achieving gender equality. However, it is the author claims that it is disheartening to note that despite the numerous years that have passed by, since the passing of the judgement its application has remained extremely limited. Rape and Sexual harassment have always been seen as issues faced only by women in a male dominated society which furthers the problem of victim blaming. Clothing and the looks of a woman become hopelessly intertwined when she is subjected to such crimes which inevitably reduces the backlash a man must receive from the society and increases the rules constricting a woman in it.
The #MeToo movement was the first, in a long list of feminist movements that was truly given attention by the media but as more and more women became braver and came out to tell their stories, the legitimacy of their word was questioned. It was said that it was easy for a woman to lie on the internet and kill the social standing of a man who was otherwise an upstanding citizen of the nation but the real question remains; does one lie in a sea of suffering negate all their stories?
