Rape Cultures in India –Pratiksha Baxi
The author’s opinion is that the city of Delhi belongs to heterosexist men and its administration enables sexual violence towards women by not keeping their safety in mind while constructing the city. There is no proper surveillance in any aspect of the city be it the transport services, public and private, or even its streets which fail to have basic lightings in them also. The administration is also never held accountable for its lack of measures taken towards women’s safety as that isn’t something they have ever considered in their planning committees. Even the city’s police targets women and their lifestyle rather than their attackers. Judiciary also helps rape being constructed as a product of passion and lust rather than an act of political violence against women. Social boycotting and political shaming of rape victims is also something that hasn’t gotten any relief from our politicians, they rather use this as a concept to gain political attention while also dismissing the issue of mass normalisation of sexual violence, giving rise to the country’s rape culture. Time and again, women’s voices are stolen, their autonomy suppressed and their safety compromised to the point where it barely exists; it is in fact the result of a society which not only tolerates rape but celebrates it by not showing any form of intolerance towards acts of sexual violence.
