The entire article is set in the backdrop of one legal case regarding the disallowing of women from wearing their hair in braids. Rogers v American Airlines becomes important because it is a classic example of how intersectionality often ends up not being recognized by courts and society, in general. The author starts with her personal story and moves to explain how even people who recognize the discriminatory tendencies towards blacks and women, fail to see how the reaction changes when these 2 intersect. Taking the example of black women, the author marvels at how black women are never seen as a sub-group arising out of African Americans and women. We could come to the conclusion that the assumptions under antidiscrimination law remain that racism and sexism always operate independently. The author also speaks of how black women bear the brunt of racist intimidation arising from western standards of beauty. The article also looks at other unfortunate situations regarding the law's views regarding racism and sexism, but the most striking remains to be the view on intersectionality.
