'Thinking Sex' today
The reading begins with a
description of how the sexual appetites of young girls are curbed by using a
hot iron on their private parts and it continued to be something my mind went
back to even as topics of homosexuality and child pornography rules were introduced.
There
can be a parallel drawn between the manner in which sexuality of certain groups
is sought to be curbed through laws and the manner in which women’s sexuality
is constantly curbed through expectations. Moreover, the negative connotations
which came with sex (negative sex) such as treating it with suspicion were reflected
in laws at a certain time period but they have a large impact on the treatment
of sex today as well. While the reading focuses on the west, sex within the
Indian society has also has a tumultuous past where homosexuality was still
seen to be punishable until recently. However, it must be important to note the
how discourse around sex was at one time seen to be less biological while at
another point psychology claimed one to be inferior if you they accepted their sexuality.
Variation is extremely important especially in the ambit of sex. Be it the
west or India, social hierarchy has and continues to lay down social rules for
sex while the entry of the market uses this sexuality to entice people even
further.
The
importance of family within such a social structure simply exemplifies and the
interlinkage of sexuality with the discourse surrounding it can never be seen
as separate.
