Article “The Hair Piece” by Paulette
Caldwell uses multiple instances to show discrimination faced by
African-American women due to their gender and their color. But this problem
has never been tackled as a single issue, as an inter-sectional issue. It is
divided into two kinds of discrimination – gender and race. The article uses
the case of Rogers v American Airlines to show such a problem where the court
refused to agree that a person could be discriminated for being a woman of
color as discrimination was thought to exist either on the basis of gender or
color, but not together. The law teachers refused to talk about the case simply
because they were scared of the outrage they would cause. Similarly, when one
girl chose to not wear her hair like how other African-American women did, she
got different comments, as if it was unlike her, how she should not or does not
be.
The way one wears their hair is a trivial
matter in everyday life. The freedom to do it is almost never thought of until
someone is discriminated on that very basis. Such little things define
discrimination.
