Analysis of the article “Night to his Day”: The Social Construction of Gender, by Judith Lorber

In the article “Night to his Day”: The Social Construction of Gender, by Judith Lorber, it shows how discussions on gender are something which is not seen of any value. As soon as the child is born, it is treated in a particular way in order to treat that particular child as a boy or a girl in society.

The writer depicts that although things have changed from the past, such as a boy and a girl receiving the same education, but at the back of the head, even progressive families are surrounded and stuck in the year-old practices to dress or behave in a particular fashion of a particular sex. He explains the reason behind it that no matter how progressive the society is, the work people get in any place, or the way a person is treated in a society is dependent upon gender of that person to a particular extent.

People fail to understand that sex and gender are two completely different things, and gender has nothing to do with genitalia and reproductive organs. People fail to understand that it is not necessary for a person to fall within the category of a man or a woman. They need to understand choosing to cross-dress, or having a sex change operation, or being of the third gender is completely normal. Gender is something that is socially constructed.

If people are stopped discriminating on gender, and people start understanding that social practices prevalent are not the only things which are natural in life, if people do understand that sex and gender are not terms which can be used alternatively, and people start treating all the genders equally, and people start understanding that this not a topic to be neglected, this problem can be solved to a large extent.
