“THINKING SEX: NOTES FOR A RADICAL THEORY OF
THE POLITICS OF SEXUALITY”

Rubin in her article - “Thinking
sex: notes for a radical theory of the politics of sexuality”
talks about the multiple perspectives on sex
and the manner in which sexuality has always been considered as an unimportant
topic in comparison to other critical problems of poverty, famine etc. She
emphasises on the internal politics in realm of sexuality. Gayle also talks
about the tag of immorality and obscenity associated with sex.
She then moves
towards the harsh history of sexual liberation and the sheer amount of political hatred
which homosexuals dealt with. The government not only looked down on homosexuals but
ruthlessly punished them and beat them up. She talks about how homosexuality
was discouraged not only by the government but even by the people.
However, even
though our society has evolved and changed its interpretation of sex and the importance of
sexuality to a great extent, homosexuality is still frowned upon by a large
section of our society. Gayle through her article tries to convey the evolution
of society’s perspective on sex and sexuality over the period of time.
