Uma Chakraborty’s “Gendering Caste: Through a Feminist lens” throws light on how the caste and class divide in the Indian society imposes patriarchy on women and more or less helps in inflicting power and control over them. The text has been written and described in a manner that helps us understand how a woman’s subordination is considered her only way of being. Chakraborty has very artistically linked the control that the society has over a woman’s sexuality with the caste she belongs to and has very convincingly argued how the men take advantage of this link and assert their power over them. She has also explained in an elaborate manner the discrimination that takes place because of an individual's gender and class and how this prejudice intensifies to an unimaginable degree when the two are merged. The text makes us reflect on the ideas of female “purity” and “impurity” and how the “Brahmanical patriarchy” that the author so briefly talks about, controls female’s sexuality. In totality and to sum it up, Chakraborty has beautifully captured the concept of intersectionality and described the marginalization that the women, specially the women belonging to the lower strata of the society, face on a day-to-day basis.
