Aga Ahmed Hussain Week 2

In her article, How Young People with Disabilities Conceptualize The Body, Sex and Marriage in Urban India: Four Case Studies, Renu Addlakha writes about how the sexual rights of disabled people are completely ignored in India. She talks about how we have reached a stage where we recognise the need for enhancement and empowerment of disabled people, but the sexual lives of these people are some what invisible to us. She takes 4 cases studies to show how disabilities have affected 4 different individuals wherein she also explains intersectionality through her study on how gender plays a role in this; women need to fight the burden of not only disabilities but also the burden of their gender. Thus, through her case studies we understand how intersectionality plays a part in the lives of such disabled individuals.
Pauletre M. Caldwell shows a different version of intersectional discrimination in her article. She uses the case of Rogers v. American Airlines, wherein a black woman was not allowed to keep her hair fully braided and was asked to wear a headpiece over these braids to cover them. The court denied her justice and dismissed her plea on the basis that discrimination on gender and as well as race cannot happen simultaneously. Both the articles very cleverly showcase how discrimination does not necessarily happen on one particular ground, there can exist more than one grounds for discrimination making it intersectional in nature and not limited to just one sphere of life.
