Aastha Gupta 18010026 Week 3

CHAPTER 1

This article talks about internal differences in the society and how its somewhere still prevalent in the society, there are mainly for reason for internal difference which is jaati system and the second is Verna system. Our society is somewhere divided into 2 parts which is done by us humans, upper class and lower class. There is a history of untouchables being secluded from the society. The main argument in this chapter is to understands how the concept of caste in women’s life. The terms jati and Verna helps us to understand how there is dominance of upper caste brahmins over the lower-class untouchables.  Untouchables were not even considered a part of the society even the law did not treat them fairly. The article talks about how Dalit women were at the lowest of the society and if we compare them to Dalit men they face 3 times more unfairly then men. It would not be wrong to assume the reason to be her gender.

CHAPTER 2 

The article here talks about how women had different class, and often enjoyed economic independence but their sexuality was always controlled by men. People usually think the main purpose of marriage is to continue the male decent line and a girl is just an object for the completion of that purpose which is the continuation of the male vansa. Women also termed as a ‘’gift” here we can see how women are treated as objects as they are being “gifted” by their fathers (kanyadan) to their husbands. the women have to maintain all the rules of purity and pollution of their husbands vansas. article mentions the importance of marriage from a male’s perspective only and how it’s important for men to continue their family and women are just a source for that. Women are regarded as ‘gateways’ Under Brahmanical patriarchy, because they are like an entry into a caste system . The article also mentions how women have to be guarded from lower class men. It is assumed that women need to be protected and are not sufficient to protect themselves.
