Gender Policing in Mainstream Hindi Cinema
Bollywood has played a huge role in perpetuating the
concept of “No means Yes” in the context women and has always shown that consistently
pushing a woman always leads to the beginning of “romance”. The author has
described how films have rather been a means to oppress females on a larger
screen and to prove this, 100 commercial Indian Films have been analyzed to
study the positive as well as negative consequences of gender perspective shown
in the movies. The CFC (Central Female Character) has been used to examine the
movies which turned out to be completely absent in 11 out of 100 films. The
author also discusses about “benevolent sexism” towards the traditional women played
in the movies which has been turning hostile instead leading to a wide trend of
sexism. Not only gender but also caste bias has been the foundation of many plots
in the Indian Cinemas.
