Imagination
is either a scary attribute provided to understand the world better or it is involuntary.
Either way, imagining something as morbid as a prostitute’s livelihood, life
spent surviving rather living, being stuck in an endless loop of exploitation,
woe and immorality. How can one choose this? One may ask. This is supposed to
be one of those “pushed into”, “no other way” profession. Joe’s narrative is to
establish difference between these two – forced prostitution and a voluntary one.
This distinction was a way of clarification towards those feminists who perceived
it as exploitation but even then, these distinctions were blurry as there was
no black and white when it came to elements of voluntary prostitution.
Joe
states how prostitution has been a deeply contentious issue for feminists and
unquestionably it must be. How can a woman’s body be treated the way it is, oppressed,
abused and exploited repeatedly? Some feminists even argue that prostitution entails
of human rights violation. This is where Coalition against trafficking in woman
(CATW) comes to play. CATW was founded by Kathleen Barry and defines prostitution
as a form of sexual exploitation just like rape, genital mutilation and battering.
