Jo Doezema's piece talks about how how prostitution is linked with consent- prostitution and consenting adults are used as interchangeable terms. It is a myth that prostitution is only practiced by women who consentually choose to work as a sex worker. A lot of victims fall prey and are forced to work as sex workers while still being a minor. Real consenting adults who practice prostitution are however only going it because it is their job and they use the miney to fulfill basic family needs children and other family members. However, in a society like ours, where we tend to shame women on the basis of their purity and judge them for their sexual habits, they are only looked down upon and branded- causing them immense mental trauma everyday. Since society as a whole looks down upon them, it becomes very difficult for them to seek help of any sort if they need it and they are detached from basic human rights. Prostitution is unrecognized as a profession and thus, sex workers become a victim of abuse- and social negativity everyday.
