With contemporary movements like feminism heavily impacting the discourse around things like misogyny, queer presence, sex and gender etc., it becomes very important to address the issue of what is to be seen in the mainstream media that we watch- and Bollywood doesn't exactly give off 'woke' vibes when you see a good looking actress dancing in an item number without the song contributing anything to the movie except for the occasional stare or two by the average Indian man. The culture in Bollywood reflects our 'culture', which is dated, archaic and in unhealthy need of some education. This culture contributes to the forming of gender stereotypes, misogynistic behaviour and objectification of women. To make matters worse, anything can be justified in this country in the name of tradition and custom, it doesn't matter how illogical, irrational or stupid it may be. Subuhi Khan argues in this piece and also compares the actual outcome of all that filth the woman has to suffer in the movie with that of a real life scenario and comes to the invariable conclusion that it ends up being much better for the woman in the movie than in real lives. There is a need to ditch these pre-existing systems of oppression against women and educate people on how to get better and equip them with the tools to think objectively and change to grow.
