Paras Gupta, Week 10

In the article “Forced to Choose”, Jo Doezima talks about prostitution and the women indulged in it. Jo Doezima touches upon the aspect of prostitution which will make the reader rethink about their perspective of sex work. She talked about the two views that are there, one that women are forcefully into prostitution or they are voluntarily engaging in prostitution. Jo Doezima points out the struggle that are faced by the workers in the industry and the pettiness and inferiority faced by the women who are forcefully in prostitution. She talks about the adults who are in prostitution with consent and use the money earned through the profession to fulfil their basic needs.

The article further talks about the role of politics in prostitution and how the feminist movement in the early 19^th century influenced the reforms in dealing with prostitution. The 1949 convention in UN which aimed at taking measures to abolish the suppressing of all kind of women trafficking and help women from the exploitation through prostitution. After this 1949 convention many more convention and laws were implemented to abolish the prostitution. 

In a society where we look at the work of prostitution as a social evil and the workers in prostitution are never treated as a human being they are. It is indeed an difficult for them to ask for help from the society when we as a society fail them to give their basic human rights.
