to Choose: Beyond the Voluntary v. Forced Prostitution Dichotomy
There is a prevalent myth
associated with prostitution and that is, that women do this voluntarily and
they enjoy it as “consenting adults” even if they do it with the intention of getting
instant money to feed themselves and their family. This is a trap which is
farce in nature. The author, Jo Doezema, talks about the issue of dichotomy between
voluntary and forced prostitution and how this distinction is just a mean to not
recognize the human rights for a major lot of them. There should be no categorization
when it comes to prostitution and because of our cultural attitude, we are
keeping these women from seeking help by forever branding them with a mark of
shame and judgement. It is not a victim-less crime and the term “voluntary” added
to prostitution only masks the sexual abuse and trauma associated with it.
